Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

    Prepare the Filo Dough

Melt the unsalted butter in a small saucepan or microwave. Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter and set aside.

Nut Filling

  1. 3

    Mix the Nut Filling

In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, chopped almonds, ground cinnamon, and sugar. Mix well to combine.

Assembling the Baklava

  1. 4

    Layer the Filo Dough

Place one sheet of filo dough into the prepared baking dish, brushing it with melted butter. Repeat this process with 7-8 sheets, layering and buttering each one.

  2. 5

    Add the Nut Filling

Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture over the buttered filo layers.

  3. 6

    Continue Layering

Add 4-5 more layers of buttered filo, followed by another layer of the nut mixture. Repeat until all the nut mixture is used, finishing with 8-10 layers of buttered filo on top.

Baking

  1. 7

    Cut and Bake

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.

Honey Syrup

  1. 8

    Prepare the Honey Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine honey, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  2. 9

    Soak the Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot honey syrup over it. Allow it to soak for at least 4 hours or overnight for the best flavor.
