Bolognese Sauce

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Pasta

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually around 8-10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water for later use.

Making the Bolognese Sauce

  1. 3

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened.

  2. 4

    Add Garlic

Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

  3. 5

    Cook the Beef

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 6-8 minutes.

  4. 6

    Add Red Wine

Pour in the red wine and let it simmer for about 2-3 minutes, allowing the alcohol to evaporate.

  5. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

  6. 8

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce thickens too much, add some reserved pasta water.

  7. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce and toss to combine. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.

Serving

  1. 10

    Plate the Dish

Serve the spaghetti bolognese hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese on top.
