Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onion

Slice the medium onion into thin rings. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Season the Beef

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Mix well and form into two equal patties.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Onions

In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.

  2. 4

    Cook the Beef Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and increase the heat to medium-high. Add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach desired doneness.

  3. 5

    Add Cheese

During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on each patty and cover the skillet to melt the cheese.

  4. 6

    Assemble the Patty Melt

On two slices of rye bread, place one patty with melted cheese and top with the caramelized onions. Place the other two slices of rye bread on top to form sandwiches.

  5. 7

    Grill the Sandwich

In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Grill each side for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Repeat with remaining sandwiches, adding more butter as needed.
