Method

Prepare the Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Mix Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix until just combined.

  2. 2

    Form Patties

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into burger patties. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing while cooking.

Make the BBQ Sauce

  1. 3

    Combine Ingredients

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.

  2. 4

    Simmer

Stir the mixture and bring it to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

Prepare Onion Rings

  1. 5

    Slice the Onion

Peel the onion and slice it into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 6

    Make the Batter

In a bowl, combine the flour, buttermilk, cornmeal, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  3. 7

    Heat Oil

In a deep skillet or pot, heat oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  4. 8

    Fry the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully place in the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Grill the Burger

  1. 9

    Preheat the Grill

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.

  2. 10

    Grill the Patties

Place the formed burger patties on the grill. Cook for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).

  3. 11

    Add Cheese (optional)

If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 12

    Prepare Buns

Toast the burger buns lightly on the grill.

  2. 13

    Assemble

On the bottom half of each bun, place a leaf of lettuce, followed by the grilled burger patty, a generous drizzle of BBQ sauce, and several onion rings on top. Top with the other half of the bun.
