Meat Filling

Mashed Potato Topping

Method

Preparation of Meat Filling

  1. 1

    Brown the Meat

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.

  2. 2

    Sauté Vegetables

Add the chopped onion, diced carrots, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

  3. 3

    Add Peas and Seasonings

Stir in the frozen peas, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Preparation of Mashed Potato Topping

  1. 4

    Cook Potatoes

In a large pot, add the cubed potatoes and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until fork-tender. Drain.

  2. 5

    Mash Potatoes

Return the potatoes to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and black pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 6

    Layer the Meat Filling

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large baking dish, spread the prepared meat filling evenly across the bottom.

  2. 7

    Top with Mashed Potatoes

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat filling. Use a fork to create texture on the surface for browning.

  3. 8

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

  4. 9

    Cool and Serve

Allow the shepherd's pie to cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Cut into squares and serve warm.
