Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Macaroni

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt, then add the macaroni. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  2. 2

    Drain the Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt the Butter

In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter completely.

  2. 4

    Add Flour

Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux, stirring constantly to avoid burning.

  3. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while continuing to whisk. Cook for about 5 minutes until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble.

  4. 6

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Stir in the shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses until melted and smooth. Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well.

Combining and Baking

  1. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce. Stir until the pasta is fully coated with the cheese sauce.

  2. 8

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the macaroni and cheese mixture into a large baking dish.

  3. 9

    Add Topping

If using, mix the breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese together in a bowl. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the macaroni and cheese.

  4. 10

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
