Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Pork
Trim any excess fat from the pork shoulder. Rinse under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
- 2
Mix the Rub
In a bowl, combine brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
- 3
Season the Pork
Rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it's well coated. Cover and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
Cooking
- 4
Sear the Pork (Optional)
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sear the pork shoulder on all sides until browned (about 3-4 minutes per side). This step is optional but adds flavor.
- 5
Slow Cook the Pork
Place the seasoned pork shoulder in a slow cooker. Add apple cider vinegar, BBQ sauce, and water. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or until the pork is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
- 6
Shred the Pork
Once cooked, remove the pork from the slow cooker and let it rest for 15 minutes. Use two forks to shred the meat, discarding any large pieces of fat.
- 7
Combine with Sauce
Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and mix it with the remaining juices and sauce. Stir well to combine.
