In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.

Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape them into burger patties.

Form the Patties

Preheat your grill or a skillet over medium-high heat.

Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium doneness. If using cheese, place desired cheese slice on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

While the patties are cooking, prepare the lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. Wash and slice as needed.

Prepare Vegetables

Optionally, toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.

Toast the Buns

On the bottom half of each bun, place a leaf of lettuce, followed by the cooked patty with melted cheese, tomato slices, onion slices, and pickle slices. Add the top half of the bun.
