Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Vanilla Bean

Slice the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape out the seeds using the back of a knife.

  2. 2

    Mix Cream and Milk

In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt. Whisk until the sugar is dissolved.

  3. 3

    Add Vanilla

Add the scraped vanilla seeds and the vanilla bean pod to the mixture. If using, add the vanilla extract as well.

Chilling

  1. 4

    Chill the Mixture

Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.

Churning

  1. 5

    Churn the Ice Cream

Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.

Freezing

  1. 6

    Freeze the Ice Cream

Transfer the churned ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours to firm up.
