Calamari

Method

Calamari Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

In a mixing bowl, combine the calamari rings with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Toss to coat evenly.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In three separate bowls, set up your breading station: one with all-purpose flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs.

  3. 3

    Bread the Calamari

Dredge each calamari ring first in the flour, then dip it into the beaten eggs, and finally coat it with breadcrumbs. Make sure each ring is well-coated.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the breaded calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 6

    Cook the Marinara Sauce

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

  2. 7

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.

  3. 8

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add fresh basil just before serving.
