For the Marinara Sauce
Method
Preparing the Marinara Sauce
- 1
- 2
Combine Ingredients
Add the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar to the saucepan. Stir well to combine.
- 3
Simmer the Sauce
Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 4
Add Fresh Basil
Stir in the chopped fresh basil and let the sauce simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
Preparing the Calamari
- 5
Prepare the Breading Mixture
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well.
- 6
- 7
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 8
Batter the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring into the wet mixture, allowing any excess to drip off, then coat it in the breading mixture, pressing gently to adhere.
- 9
Fry the Calamari
Carefully place the battered calamari rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- 10
Drain and Serve
Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried calamari and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve immediately with the marinara sauce.
