Method
Cooking Directions
- 1
Prepare the Pork
Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder and cut it into large chunks for easier cooking.
- 2
Make the Rub
In a bowl, mix together brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Rub this mixture all over the pork pieces.
- 3
Sauté Aromatics
In a large skillet, heat a little oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until soft and fragrant.
- 4
Combine in Slow Cooker
Transfer the sautéed onion and garlic to a slow cooker. Add the pork, barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, liquid smoke, and water.
- 5
Cook on Low
Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until the pork is tender and easy to shred.
- 6
Shred the Pork
Once cooked, remove the pork from the slow cooker, shred it using two forks, and return it to the pot to mix with the sauce.
- 7
Serve
Serve the pulled pork on buns, with extra barbecue sauce if desired.
