Method
Pasta Preparation
- 1
Cook the Mostaccioli
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the mostaccioli pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Meat Sauce Preparation
- 2
Cook the Ground Beef
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- 3
Add Vegetables and Sauce
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the ground beef. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cheese Mixture Preparation
- 4
Combine Cheese Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, shredded mozzarella (reserve 1 cup for topping), grated Parmesan, egg, and chopped parsley. Mix until well combined and smooth.
Assembly
- 5
Layer the Ingredients
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Layer half of the cooked mostaccioli on top, followed by half of the cheese mixture. Repeat the layers with the remaining meat sauce, mostaccioli, and cheese mixture.
- 6
Add Toppings
Top the final layer with the reserved shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan.
Baking
- 7
Bake the Mostaccioli
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
Serving
- 8
Serve and Enjoy
Remove the mostaccioli from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Cut into squares and enjoy with a side salad or garlic bread.
