Method
Cheeses
- 1
Bring to room temperature
Remove the cheddar and brie from the refrigerator 30–60 minutes before serving so flavors and textures open up. Keep rind on brie; score a cross or slice a wedge if you prefer.
- 2
Prepare cheddar
Cut the cheddar into a mix of 1/2-inch cubes and thin slices to create visual variety and ease of picking.
- 3
Prepare brie
If serving whole, make a shallow X on top of the brie rind and place on board. Optionally slice into wedges (6–8) for easy serving.
Meats
- 4
Fold prosciutto slices loosely into ribbons or roll each slice to create graceful folds; arrange in small piles. For soppressata or salami, fan slices or roll into tight cylinders and place in another small pile. This creates texture and makes grabbing easy.
Crackers & Bread
- 5
Fresh Fruit & Veg
- 6
Rinse grapes and leave on small stems if possible. Core and thinly slice the apple and toss slices briefly with a teaspoon of lemon juice (optional) to prevent browning. Arrange fruit and cherry tomatoes or cornichons in small clusters or bowls on the board to provide color and palate cleansers.
Spreads & Sweeteners
- 7
Nuts & Extras
- 8
Place nuts and olives in small bowls or scatter in small piles. Tuck herb sprigs among items for aroma and a finished look. Make sure to vary heights and shapes on the board by stacking some items and leaving others flat.
Assembly & Presentation
- 9
Choose a large wooden board, slate, or platter. Start by placing the cheese pieces so they anchor the board visually (one near each end). Add bowls/ramekins for spreads and olives next to cheeses. Arrange meats near cheeses they pair with, then fill gaps with crackers, baguette slices, fruit clusters, and nuts. Aim for a balance of colors, textures, and flavors across the board. Provide small cheese knives, toothpicks, and a set of serving utensils. Label cheeses and meats if desired.
- 10
Final checks: make sure there are at least 2–3 pieces of each type easy to grab, keep wet items (olives, jams) in bowls to prevent sogginess, and refill items as they run low while serving.
