1. Prepare glass

Chill a coupe or small cocktail glass by filling it with ice water while you prepare the drink. Alternatively, place the glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes.

2. Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker add 6 ice cubes, 2 fl oz Sambuca, 0.5 fl oz coffee liqueur, 0.5 fl oz freshly brewed espresso (cooled slightly) and 0.25 fl oz simple syrup if you prefer extra sweetness. Add 1 dash of Angostura bitters if using.

3. Shake

Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes very cold and the mixture is well combined and slightly frothy from the espresso.

4. Strain and serve

Dump the ice water from the chilled glass (if used). Using a fine strainer (or the shaker's strainer), double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe to remove ice shards and espresso crema solids.

5. Garnish

Float 3 whole coffee beans on the surface of the cocktail as a classic garnish and serve immediately.
