1. Prepare glass

Chill a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you mix the drink.

2. Measure and combine

In a mixing glass, add 2 tablespoons Fernet-Branca, 1 tablespoon dry vermouth, 1/2 tablespoon simple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, and 1 dash Angostura bitters.

3. Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice (about 1 cup). Stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.

4. Strain

Discard ice or water from the chilled serving glass. Using a bar strainer, strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or rocks glass.

5. Garnish and serve

Express the oils of a lemon twist or orange peel over the drink by holding the peel over the glass and giving it a quick twist, then drop the peel into the glass as a garnish. Serve immediately.
