Preparation

Prepare Patties

1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.

2. Gently mix until just combined; avoid overworking the beef to keep patties tender.

3. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into patties about 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) thick, slightly larger than the buns.

Cheese & Toppings

4. Place cheddar cheese slices on top of each patty during the last 1-2 minutes of cooking to melt.

5. Wash and dry lettuce leaves; pat dry.

6. Slice tomato into even rounds.

7. Slice onion into thin rings or half-moons; set aside.

8. Arrange pickle slices on a plate for assembling burgers.

Toast Buns & Make Sauce

9. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and toast the cut sides of the buns until golden.

10. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and Dijon mustard to create a simple burger sauce.

Cook Patties

11. Preheat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat.

12. Cook patties for about 3-4 minutes per side for medium; adjust time for desired doneness.

13. If using cheese, place slices on patties during the last 1-2 minutes to melt.

Assemble Burgers

14. Spread the sauce on the bottom buns.

15. Layer lettuce on the bottom bun, followed by tomato and onion.

16. Place a cheese-melted patty on top, then add pickle slices.

17. Top with the upper bun and serve immediately.
