Method

Cake Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Cake Batter

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  2. 2

    Mix Wet Ingredients

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in the boiling water until well combined; the batter will be thin.

  3. 3

    Bake the Cakes

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans to cool completely on a wire rack.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Buttercream

In a medium bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing on low until combined. Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract. Beat on high for 2-3 minutes until fluffy. Gently fold in the sumac.

  5. 5

    Assemble the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of buttercream on top, then place the second layer on top. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream.
