Filling

Grape Leaves

Cooking Liquid

Method

Prepare the Filling

  1. 1

    Rinse and Soak Rice

Rinse the long-grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for about 30 minutes, then drain.

  2. 2

    Sauté the Onions

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

    Combine Filling Ingredients

In a large bowl, mix the soaked rice, sautéed onions, chopped parsley, chopped mint, lemon juice, salt, black pepper, and pine nuts (if using). Stir well to combine.

Prepare Grape Leaves

  1. 4

    Rinse Grape Leaves

Carefully remove the grape leaves from the jar and rinse them under cold water to remove excess brine. Pat dry with a paper towel.

Stuff and Roll Grape Leaves

  1. 5

    Stuff the Leaves

Place a grape leaf, vein side up, on a flat surface. Add about 1 tablespoon of the filling near the stem end of the leaf.

  2. 6

    Roll the Leaves

Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling, then roll tightly from the stem end to the tip. Repeat with remaining leaves and filling.

Cooking the Grape Leaves

  1. 7

    Prepare Cooking Liquid

In a large pot, add the vegetable broth and lemon slices. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.

  2. 8

    Arrange Stuffed Leaves

Place the stuffed grape leaves seam side down in the simmering broth. Arrange them tightly in a single layer.

  3. 9

    Cover and Cook

Cover the pot and let the grape leaves simmer on low heat for about 30-35 minutes, until the rice is tender and the leaves are soft.
