Method

Preparation of Filling

  1. 1

    Sauté Onions

In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, sautéed onions, uncooked rice, parsley, mint, salt, black pepper, cinnamon, and the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Mix thoroughly until well combined.

Wrapping

  1. 3

    Prepare Grape Leaves

Lay a grape leaf flat on a clean surface, with the stem end facing you.

  2. 4

    Add Filling

Place about 1 tablespoon of the filling at the base of the leaf.

  3. 5

    Roll the Leaves

Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling, then roll it up tightly from the base to the tip. Repeat this process with the remaining leaves and filling.

Cooking

  1. 6

    Arrange Wrapped Leaves

Place the rolled grape leaves seam-side down in a large pot. Arrange them snugly to prevent them from unraveling during cooking.

  2. 7

    Add Cooking Liquid

In a bowl, mix together the water (or broth) and lemon juice. Pour this mixture over the arranged grape leaves in the pot.

  3. 8

    Simmer

Cover the pot and bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for about 45 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the leaves are tender.
