Pita Bread

Gyro Meat

Method

Prepare the Gyro Meat

  1. 1

    Mix the Meat Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb, ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly combined.

  2. 2

    Shape the Meat

Form the meat mixture into oval patties or logs, about 1 inch thick.

  3. 3

    Cook the Gyro Meat

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove from heat and let rest.

Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce

  1. 4

    Combine Tzatziki Ingredients

In a bowl, mix the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, dill, lemon juice, and salt. Stir until well blended.

  2. 5

    Chill the Sauce

Cover the Tzatziki sauce with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Assemble the Gyro

  1. 6

    Prepare the Pita

Warm the whole wheat pita bread in a dry skillet or microwave for a few seconds until soft.

  2. 7

    Layer the Ingredients

On each pita, layer some shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and red onions. Slice the cooked gyro meat and place it over the vegetables.

  3. 8

    Add Tzatziki Sauce

Drizzle the Tzatziki sauce generously over the gyro meat.

  4. 9

    Wrap and Serve

Fold the pita over the filling, wrap in parchment or foil if desired, and serve immediately.
