Preparing Ropa Vieja

1. Cook the Brisket

In a large pot, cover the brisket with water, add onion, bell pepper, garlic, canned tomatoes, cumin, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 2 hours or until the meat is tender.

2. Shred the Brisket

Remove the brisket from the pot, let it cool slightly, and shred it with two forks. Return the shredded meat to the pot with the cooking liquid.

3. Simmer

Allow the shredded brisket to simmer in the broth for an additional 30 minutes to absorb flavors.

Making Hogao

4. Sauté Ingredients

In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion, tomatoes, garlic, and sauté until soft. Stir in chopped cilantro and cook for another 2-3 minutes.

5. Combine with Ropa Vieja

Mix the hogao with the shredded brisket and let it simmer briefly to combine flavors.

Preparing Tostones

6. Slice Plantains

Peel the green plantains and cut them into 1-inch thick slices.

7. Fry Twice

In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Fry the slices for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden. Remove from oil, flatten each slice with a plate, and return to the oil to fry again until crispy. Season with salt.

Serving

8. Plate the Dish

Serve the ropa vieja on a plate alongside the tostones, cooked beans, rice, and sliced avocado. Enjoy!
