Cook the Broth
In a large pot, combine the chopped tomatoes, onion, garlic, vegetable broth, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.

Blend the Broth
Once the broth has simmered, use an immersion blender or transfer to a blender to puree until smooth. Stir in lime juice and adjust seasoning if necessary.

Prepare the Tortillas
While the broth is simmering, heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.

Fry the Tortillas
Cut the corn tortillas into strips. Once the oil is hot, add the tortilla strips in batches and fry until they are crispy and golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Assembling the Sopa

In a bowl, add a generous amount of the prepared broth.

Top the broth with crispy tortilla strips, then add cheese, sour cream, and slices of avocado.
