Preparing the Beans

Rinse the Beans
Rinse the whole black beans under cold water in a fine mesh strainer to remove any dirt or impurities.

Soak the Beans (optional)
If you have time, soak the rinsed beans in water for 4-8 hours or overnight. This helps to reduce cooking time and improve tenderness.

Combine with Water
In a medium pot, combine the rinsed (and soaked, if applicable) black beans with 3 cups of fresh water.

Boil the Beans
Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat.

Simmer the Beans
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the beans simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours until they are tender.
