Method
Meatballs
- 1
Prepare the Meatball Mixture
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
- 2
Shape the Meatballs
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 3
Bake the Meatballs
Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until they are cooked through and browned.
Marinara Sauce
- 4
- 5
Simmer the Sauce
Add the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Assembly
- 6
Assemble the Sub
Slice the sub rolls lengthwise, but not all the way through. Place 2-3 meatballs in each roll and spoon some marinara sauce over the meatballs.
- 7
Add the Cheese
Top each sub with slices of smoked provolone cheese and sprinkle with Romano cheese.
- 8
Melt the Cheese
Place the assembled subs under a broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch closely to avoid burning.
