Ingredients for Gefilte Fish

Method

Directions for Preparing Gefilte Fish

  1. 1

    Prepare the Fish Mixture

In a food processor, combine the whitefish fillets, onion, and carrot. Pulse until finely chopped but not pureed.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

In a large bowl, mix the fish mixture with eggs, matzo meal, salt, pepper, and sugar until well combined.

  3. 3

    Shape the Quenelles

Wet your hands and shape the mixture into oval-shaped quenelles (about 2 inches long). Place them on a plate.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Poaching Liquid

In a large pot, bring the water or fish stock to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

  5. 5

    Poach the Quenelles

Carefully add the quenelles to the simmering liquid. Cook for about 20-25 minutes, until they are firm and cooked through.

  6. 6

    Serve

Using a slotted spoon, transfer the gefilte fish to a serving platter. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with sliced onions and carrots.
