Calamari

Method

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 1

    Clean and Prepare Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Prepare Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.

  4. 4

    Coat the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring first into the wet mixture, then into the dry mixture, ensuring they are well coated.

Cooking Calamari

  1. 5

    Heat Oil

In a large, deep skillet or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Fry Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 1-2 minutes or until golden brown.

  3. 7

    Drain

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Making Marinara Sauce

  1. 8

    Sauté Garlic

In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 9

    Add Tomatoes and Spices

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, then add oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir to combine.

  3. 10

    Simmer Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serving

  1. 11

    Plate the Calamari

Serve the fried calamari hot with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
