Preparing the Calamari

Clean and Prepare Calamari
Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.

Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.

Coat the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring first into the wet mixture, then into the dry mixture, ensuring they are well coated.
Cooking Calamari

Heat Oil
In a large, deep skillet or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Fry Calamari
Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 1-2 minutes or until golden brown.

Drain
Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried calamari from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Making Marinara Sauce

Add Tomatoes and Spices
Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, then add oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir to combine.

Simmer Sauce
Bring the sauce to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and let it cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Serving

Plate the Calamari
Serve the fried calamari hot with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
