Method

Preparing the Dough

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour with water gradually, mixing with your hands until a smooth, pliable dough forms.

  2. 2

    Rest the Dough

Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for about 30 minutes.

Preparing the Filling

  1. 3

    Prepare the Fillings

If using red bean paste, make sure it's soft and pliable. If using chopped peanuts or sesame paste, ensure they are ready for filling. Set aside.

Forming the Tang Yuan

  1. 4

    Shape the Balls

Take a small piece of dough (about the size of a ping pong ball) and flatten it into a disc. Place a small spoonful of your desired filling in the center and carefully fold the dough over, pinching the edges to seal. Roll gently between your palms to form a smooth ball.

  2. 5

    Repeat the Process

Repeat the shaping process for all the dough and filling until finished.

Cooking the Tang Yuan

  1. 6

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil.

  2. 7

    Cook the Tang Yuan

Once the water is boiling, carefully drop the tang yuan into the pot. Allow them to cook until they float to the surface, which usually takes about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 8

    Prepare the Syrup

In a separate saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar and 2 slices of ginger with 4 cups of water. Bring to a simmer until the sugar dissolves and the ginger infuses the syrup.

  4. 9

    Serve

Once the tang yuan are cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove them from the pot and transfer them to serving bowls. Pour the ginger syrup over the tang yuan and serve hot.
