Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Pickles
Drain the sliced dill pickles and lay them out on paper towels to remove excess moisture. Pat them dry with another paper towel.
- 2
Make the Batter
In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk and egg together until combined. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
Frying
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles and bubbles, it's ready.
- 4
Coat the Pickles
Take each pickle slice and dip it into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off.
- 5
Fry the Pickles
Carefully place the battered pickles into the hot oil, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy.
- 6
Drain and Serve
Once fried, remove the pickle chips from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve hot with ranch dressing for dipping if desired.
