Method

Bread Prep

1

Slice breads

Using a serrated bread knife, slice the artisan table loaf into 1/2-inch (1.25 cm) slices. Slice the caraway rye loaf into 1/2-inch slices as well. Arrange slices on a large cutting board or serving tray. Reserve whole loaves if you prefer to slice at the table.

2

Optional toast

If you prefer warm or lightly crisp bread, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange slices in a single layer on a baking sheet and warm 5–7 minutes until just heated through and edges are slightly crisp. Remove and let cool 1–2 minutes before serving.

Butter Preparation

3

Soften butter

Remove unsalted butter from refrigeration 30–45 minutes before serving so it becomes spreadable but not melty. For quicker softening, cut butter into 1/2-inch slices and let sit at room temperature 15–20 minutes.

4

Season and shape

Place softened butter in a medium bowl. Add sea salt flakes and, if using, caraway seeds, freshly ground black pepper, and chopped herbs. Use a spatula or fork to mash and fold until evenly combined. Taste and adjust salt or herbs as desired.

5

Present butter

For a casual presentation, transfer seasoned butter to a small ramekin. For a composed look, spoon the butter onto a piece of parchment and roll into a log, twisting ends to seal; chill 10–15 minutes to firm if needed, then slice into rounds. Sprinkle a few extra sea salt flakes and a light dusting of caraway seeds or chopped herbs on top for garnish.

Plating & Serving

6

Arrange the sliced artisan loaf and caraway rye on a serving board or basket. Place ramekin or butter log on the board with a butter knife or spreader. Add optional accompaniments (whole grain mustard, honey, olive oil) in small bowls to the board.

7

Label breads if you wish (e.g., 'Artisan Table Loaf' and 'Caraway Rye') so guests know the varieties. Encourage guests to spread the seasoned butter onto warm or room-temperature slices. Replenish bread as needed.

8

Estimated serving suggestion: the quantities provided serve 6–8 people as a shared bread course or accompaniment.
