Crispy Fried Gator

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Marinate the Gator

Place the alligator meat in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it. Ensure all pieces are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for better flavor.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Breading

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to create an even coating.

Frying

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep frying pan or Dutch oven, pour in the vegetable oil. Heat over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accuracy.

  2. 4

    Coat the Gator

Remove the marinated gator pieces from the refrigerator. Shake off any excess buttermilk and dredge each piece in the flour mixture, ensuring they are fully coated.

  3. 5

    Fry the Gator

Carefully place the coated gator pieces into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serving

  1. 6

    Plate and Serve

Serve the crispy fried gator hot, garnished with lemon wedges and your choice of hot sauce for dipping.
