Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Bread

Start by laying out the slices of sourdough bread on a clean surface.

  2. 2

    Spread Butter

Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each slice of bread.

Layering

  1. 3

    Add Dijon Mustard

On the unbuttered side of two slices, spread 1/2 tablespoon of Dijon mustard evenly.

  2. 4

    Layer Ham

Place half of the Black Forest ham evenly over the Dijon mustard on both slices.

  3. 5

    Layer Cheese

Add half of the Gouda cheese on top of the ham on both slices.

  4. 6

    Add Arugula

Top the cheese layer with a handful of fresh arugula, followed by the remaining ham and cheese.

Cooking

  1. 7

    Grill the Sandwiches

Top each layered slice with the remaining slices of bread (buttered side out). Heat a skillet over medium heat and grill the sandwiches for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

  2. 8

    Season and Serve

Remove from the skillet, season with salt and black pepper to taste, and slice in half before serving.
