Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp of baking powder, 1 tsp of salt, and 1 tbsp of sugar. Mix well to combine.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add 1 cup of milk, 3 tbsp of warm water, and 1 tbsp of vegetable oil. Stir until the mixture forms a soft dough.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat 4 cups of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Roll Out the Dough

After resting, roll the dough out to about 1/8 inch thickness on a floured surface. Cut into squares or triangles (about 2-3 inches in size).

  3. 6

    Fry the Dough

Carefully place a few pieces of the dough into the hot oil. Fry until they puff up and are golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  1. 7

    Mix Cinnamon Sugar

In a small bowl, mix together 1 cup of granulated sugar and 2 tbsp of ground cinnamon.

  2. 8

    Coat the Sopapillas

While the sopapillas are still warm, coat them generously in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully covered.

Serving

  1. 9

    Serve with Honey or Caramel

Arrange the sopapillas on a serving platter and serve warm with honey or caramel sauce for dipping.
