Method
Prepare Bagels
Split and toast
Slice the 2 bagels in half horizontally. Lightly toast the cut sides in a toaster or under a broiler until golden and crisp to your preference (about 1–2 minutes in a toaster).
Make the Cream Cheese Spread
In a small bowl, combine 6 tablespoons softened cream cheese, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, and 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill (if using). Stir until smooth and evenly mixed. Taste and adjust lemon or pepper to preference.
If you prefer a looser spread, add 1–2 teaspoons of water or milk and stir to reach desired consistency.
Prepare Toppings
Wash and slice the tomato into 1/4-inch rounds. Pat each slice dry with a paper towel to avoid soggy bagels.
Drain any excess liquid from the smoked salmon packaging and gently separate slices so they lay flat and are ready to arrange.
Assemble the Plate
Spread about 1–1.5 tablespoons of the prepared cream cheese mixture on each toasted bagel half, spreading evenly to the edges.
On half of the bagel halves (or on both if you prefer), layer 2–3 slices of smoked salmon, folding the slices slightly for texture.
Top the salmon with a few rings of red onion (about 6–8 rings per half), one or two tomato slices if using on that half, and sprinkle about 1 teaspoon capers over each salmon-topped half.
Season lightly with a pinch of freshly ground black pepper (about 1/8 teaspoon per half). Squeeze a small amount of lemon juice (about 1/4 teaspoon) from the lemon wedge over the salmon for brightness.
Garnish each assembled half with a small dill sprig. Arrange remaining bagel halves, any extra salmon, tomatoes, onions, and capers on the plate for guests to customize.
Serve
Serve immediately while bagels are still slightly warm. Provide extra lemon wedges, capers, and cream cheese on the side as needed. Accompany with sliced cucumber or mixed greens if desired.
