Classic Milkshake Base

Garnishes (optional)

Method

Classic Milkshake Base

1

Chill equipment

If you have time, place the milkshake glasses in the freezer for 10–15 minutes to keep the milkshake cold longer.

2

Add 1 cup whole milk, 2 cups vanilla ice cream, 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract to a blender. Secure the lid.

3

Blend on medium-high for 20–45 seconds until the mixture is smooth and thick. Stop and scrape down the sides with a spatula if needed, then blend another 5–10 seconds. The texture should be pourable but thick—add up to 2 tablespoons more milk for a thinner shake or an extra 1/2 cup ice cream for a thicker consistency.

Chocolate Milkshake Add-ins

4

For a chocolate milkshake, add 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder to the blender with the base ingredients. If you want pronounced chocolate ribbons or extra sweetness, drizzle 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup into the blender or reserve some to swirl inside the glass before pouring.

5

Blend until fully incorporated, about 30–40 seconds, scraping as needed. Taste and add a touch more sugar (up to 1 teaspoon) if you prefer it sweeter.

Strawberry Milkshake Add-ins

6

For a strawberry milkshake, add 1 cup hulled fresh or frozen strawberries to the blender with the base ingredients. If using frozen berries, allow the blender to run a little longer to break them down smoothly.

7

Optional: add 1 teaspoon strawberry jam for extra concentrated fruit flavor. Blend until smooth, about 30–45 seconds, scraping down the sides once if needed.

Garnishes (optional)

8

If you reserved chocolate syrup, drizzle it along the inside of chilled glasses. Pour the finished milkshake into the prepared glasses.

9

Top each milkshake with about 1/4 cup whipped cream. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon chocolate shavings or sprinkles over the whipped cream, and add a maraschino cherry on top if desired.

10

Serve immediately with a straw and a long spoon.
