Whisky & Glassware
Chill glass (optional)
If you prefer your whisky slightly cooler, place a rocks glass in the freezer for 10–15 minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare other items; discard the water just before pouring.
Add a large ice cube or sphere to a rocks or Glencairn-style glass. A single large cube melts slower and preserves the whisky's flavors.
Pour 2 oz Balvenie 14-year-old single malt over the ice.
If desired, add 1/2 teaspoon of room-temperature water (or a few drops) to open the whisky's aromas and flavors. Add gradually, nosing and tasting between additions to reach your preferred balance.
Garnish (optional)
Hold the orange peel over the glass with the outer (zest) side facing down about 3–4 inches above the whisky. Firmly twist the peel to express the citrus oils onto the surface of the whisky, then rub the peel's rim around the glass edge and drop it into the drink (or discard if you prefer no bitters from the pith).
Alternatively use a lemon peel following the same method if you prefer a brighter citrus note.
Gently nose the whisky and take small sips, allowing the flavors to develop on the palate. Re-taste after a few minutes — slight dilution from the ice will reveal additional layers.
