Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Ingredients

Gather all the ingredients needed for the Reuben sandwich: rye bread, corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, and unsalted butter.

  2. 2

    Butter the Bread

Spread 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. This will help to achieve a golden-brown crust when grilling.

Assembly

  1. 3

    Layer the Ingredients

On the unbuttered side of four slices of rye bread, layer the corned beef (1/4 pound per sandwich), followed by 1/4 cup of sauerkraut, 2 slices of Swiss cheese, and a generous drizzle of Russian dressing.

  2. 4

    Top the Sandwich

Place the remaining four slices of rye bread on top of the sandwiches, buttered side facing out.

Cooking

  1. 5

    Grill the Sandwiches

Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side, or until golden brown.

  2. 6

    Flip and Grill

Carefully flip the sandwiches using a spatula and grill the other side for an additional 4-5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the bread is golden brown.

Serving

  1. 7

    Slice and Serve

Remove the sandwiches from the skillet, let them cool for a minute, then slice in half diagonally. Serve hot with additional Russian dressing on the side if desired.
