Electrolyte Base

Method

Electrolyte Base

  1. 1

Warm 1 cup of the filtered water in a small saucepan or microwave until slightly warm (not boiling). This helps dissolve the salts and sugar more quickly.

  2. 2

Stir the kosher salt and potassium chloride (if using) into the warm water until fully dissolved. This creates the concentrated electrolyte solution.

  3. 3

Pour the dissolved electrolyte solution into a pitcher and add the remaining 3 cups of cold filtered water. Stir to combine.

Sweetener

  1. 4

Add the granulated sugar to the warm electrolyte solution before adding all the cold water so it dissolves easily. Stir until no sugar grains remain.

  2. 5

If using honey or agave, stir it in while the liquid is still slightly warm so it blends smoothly.

Flavor & Acidity

  1. 6

Add the freshly squeezed lemon and orange juices to the pitcher and stir.

  2. 7

Stir in the citric acid (or extra lemon juice) to adjust tanginess. Taste and add up to another 1/2 teaspoon if you prefer a tarter drink.

  3. 8

If you want a specific store-brand flavor, stir in the natural fruit concentrate or a small amount of flavored drink mix. Start with 1 teaspoon and increase to taste.

Optional Add-ins & Serving

  1. 9

If using a commercial electrolyte packet instead of DIY salts, dissolve the packet into the warm water following the packet instructions and omit the kosher salt and potassium chloride.

  2. 10

Add ice to chill immediately, or refrigerate the pitcher until cold (about 30–60 minutes).

  3. 11

Stir well before serving. Pour into a bottle or glass and consume within 48 hours; keep refrigerated. Shake or stir again before drinking if any settling occurs.
