Method
Bagels
- 1
Prepare bagel
If your bagel is intact, slice it horizontally with a serrated knife to create two even halves. If pre-sliced, separate the halves.
- 2
Optional: lightly steam or refresh (recommended for day-old bagels)
If the bagel is stale or you want a softer interior, place the cut bagel halves in a toaster oven or skillet. Sprinkle or brush about 1 tablespoon of water onto the cut sides (not the crust). Heat in a covered skillet over medium-low heat for 1–2 minutes or place in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 3–4 minutes until warmed and slightly steamed. Remove carefully — hot steam may escape.
- 3
Toast
Toast the bagel halves to your preferred doneness using a pop-up toaster or toaster oven. For a lightly crisp exterior and warm interior, toast on medium (about 1–2 minutes depending on appliance). For a more crisp, golden surface, toast a bit longer but monitor to avoid burning.
- 4
Butter
Immediately after toasting, while the bagel is hot, spread 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter evenly over each cut surface so it melts into the bread. If you prefer less or more butter, adjust quantity to taste. If using salted butter or adding salt separately, you may omit the optional 1/8 tsp salt; otherwise, sprinkle a light pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon) over the butter to enhance flavor.
- 5
Serve
Place the buttered bagel halves on a plate, cut-sides up or together as preferred, and serve immediately while warm. Enjoy with coffee, tea, or your preferred beverage.
