Preparation
- 1
Dissolve the Sugars
In a large pot, combine 4 cups of water, 2 cups of granulated sugar, and 1 cup of brown sugar. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugars are fully dissolved.
- 2
Add Flavoring
Once the sugars are dissolved, remove the pot from heat. Stir in 2 tsp of vanilla extract and 2 tsp of root beer extract. Mix well to ensure the extracts are evenly distributed.
- 3
Cool the Mixture
Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, which should take about 30 minutes.
- 4
Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine 1 tsp of yeast with 1/4 cup of warm water (not boiling). Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- 5
Combine and Ferment
Once the sugar mixture has cooled, add the activated yeast to the pot and stir well. Cover the pot with a clean kitchen towel and let it sit in a warm area for about 1-2 hours, until it begins to bubble.
- 6
Bottling
After fermentation, add 4 cups of bottled carbonated water to the root beer mixture and stir gently. Carefully pour the root beer into clean bottles, leaving some space at the top.
- 7
Seal the Bottles
Seal the bottles tightly with caps. Allow the bottled root beer to sit at room temperature for another 2-3 days for carbonation to develop.
- 8
Chill and Serve
Once the carbonation is achieved, refrigerate the bottles. Serve chilled over ice for a refreshing beverage.
