Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (1.5 cups), granulated sugar (1 tbsp), and active dry yeast (2 tbs). Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour (4 cups) and salt (1 tsp). Once the yeast mixture is foamy, add it to the flour mixture along with melted butter (2 tbs). Stir until a dough begins to form.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shaping and Baking

  1. 4

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 5

    Prepare Baking Soda Solution

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda (2 tbs) to a boil.

  3. 6

    Shape the Pretzels

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope (about 24 inches) and shape it into a pretzel.

  4. 7

    Boil the Pretzels

Carefully drop each shaped pretzel into the boiling baking soda solution for about 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on the prepared baking sheet.

  5. 8

    Egg Wash and Salt

Brush each pretzel with the egg wash (1 beaten egg mixed with 1 tbsp water) and sprinkle with coarse sea salt (1 tbsp).

  6. 9

    Bake the Pretzels

Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool before serving.
