Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the water.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, add 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour, stirring constantly for about 1 minute to create a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 0.5 tsp of salt, 0.25 tsp of black pepper, and 0.5 tsp of garlic powder. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining Ingredients

  1. 8

    Mix Pasta and Cheese Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring well to coat the pasta evenly.

  2. 9

    Prepare Topping (Optional)

If desired, mix 0.5 cups of bread crumbs with 0.25 cups of grated Parmesan cheese in a bowl.

  3. 10

    Bake (Optional)

Transfer the macaroni and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
