Calamari Preparation

Serving

Method

Calamari Preparation

  1. 1

    Soak the Calamari

In a medium bowl, pour 1 cup of buttermilk over the cleaned calamari rings. Ensure all pieces are submerged. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator to tenderize.

Breading Mixture

  1. 2

    Prepare the Breading

In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of cornstarch, 1 tsp of salt, 1 tsp of black pepper, 1 tsp of paprika, and 1 tsp of garlic powder. Mix well until all dry ingredients are evenly distributed.

Frying

  1. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat 2 cups of vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Use a thermometer to ensure the oil reaches a temperature of about 350°F (175°C).

  2. 4

    Coat and Fry the Calamari

Remove the calamari from the buttermilk and allow excess to drip off. Dredge the calamari rings in the prepared breading mixture, ensuring they are fully coated. Fry a few calamari rings at a time in the hot oil for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Serving

  1. 5

    Plate the Dish

Arrange the crispy calamari on a serving platter. Serve with lemon wedges and a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
