Prepare the Onions
Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the onions. Cook until they are caramelized, about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside.

Form the Patty
In a bowl, season the ground sirloin with salt and black pepper. Form the meat into a single large patty, about 8 ounces in weight.

Grill the Bread
In another skillet, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. Place the slices of rye bread in the skillet and grill until golden brown on both sides.

Assemble the Patty Melt
On one slice of the grilled rye bread, place the cheeseburger patty, followed by the caramelized onions. Top with another slice of rye bread to complete the sandwich.

Cut the patty melt in half and serve hot with your choice of sides.
