Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the onions. Cook until they are caramelized, about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

In a bowl, season the ground sirloin with salt and black pepper. Form the meat into a single large patty, about 8 ounces in weight.

  3. 3

    Grill the Patty

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patty for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until it reaches your desired level of doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place the Swiss cheese slices on top of the patty to melt.

  4. 4

    Grill the Bread

In another skillet, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. Place the slices of rye bread in the skillet and grill until golden brown on both sides.

  5. 5

    Assemble the Patty Melt

On one slice of the grilled rye bread, place the cheeseburger patty, followed by the caramelized onions. Top with another slice of rye bread to complete the sandwich.

  6. 6

    Serve

Cut the patty melt in half and serve hot with your choice of sides.
