Method

Preparing the Black Bean Patty

  1. 1

    Mash the Beans

In a large bowl, drain and rinse the canned black beans. Use a fork or a potato masher to mash the beans until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

  2. 2

    Mix Ingredients

Add breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, black pepper, and the egg to the mashed beans. Stir until well combined.

  3. 3

    Form Patties

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty.

  4. 4

    Cook the Patties

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and heated through.

Assembling the Burger

  1. 5

    Toast the Buns

Optional: Toast the burger buns on a grill or in a toaster until lightly golden.

  2. 6

    Add Toppings

Place a black bean patty on each bun. Top with a slice of cheddar cheese, a lettuce leaf, a few slices of red onion, and a dollop of garlic aioli.

  3. 7

    Serve

Close the burger with the top bun and serve immediately with your favorite sides.
