Sausage Gravy

Method

Biscuits

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Cut in the Butter

Add the cold unsalted butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. 4

    Add Buttermilk

Pour in the buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Shape the Biscuits

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times. Pat it into a 1-inch thick round. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits.

  6. 6

    Bake

Place the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown.

Sausage Gravy

  1. 7

    Cook the Sausage

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground sausage and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.

  2. 8

    Make the Roux

Once the sausage is cooked, sprinkle the flour over the sausage and stir to combine. Cook for about 1 minute until the flour is lightly browned.

  3. 9

    Add Milk

Gradually stir in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens.

  4. 10

    Season the Gravy

Add black pepper and salt to taste. Stir well to combine.

  5. 11

    Serve

Spoon the sausage gravy over the freshly baked biscuits and enjoy!
