Bagel Ingredients

Method

Bagel Directions

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  4. 4

    Shape the Bagels

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and poke a hole in the center to form a bagel shape.

  5. 5

    Boil the Bagels

In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda. Boil each bagel for about 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  6. 6

    Prepare for Baking

Beat the egg and brush it over the bagels. If desired, sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds on top.

  7. 7

    Bake the Bagels

Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
