Preparing the Calamari

Clean the Calamari
If not pre-cleaned, rinse the calamari under cold water and remove any membranes or innards. Cut into rings if necessary.

Prepare the Breading Station
In a shallow dish, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and paprika. In another dish, whisk the eggs. In a third dish, place the breadcrumbs.

Bread the Calamari
Take each calamari ring, dip it into the flour mixture, then into the egg, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. Set aside on a plate.

Fry the Calamari
Once the oil is hot, carefully add a few calamari rings at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Pour in the crushed tomatoes and add the red pepper flakes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and let simmer for about 15 minutes.

Garnish and Serve
Once the sauce is thickened, remove from heat and garnish with fresh basil before serving.

Plate the Dish
Arrange the crispy calamari on a serving platter and serve with the spicy marinara sauce on the side.
