Method

Preparation Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rinsed rice and water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once cooked, transfer to a bowl.

  2. 2

    Season the Rice

In a small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat gently until sugar dissolves. Pour the mixture over the warm rice and fold gently with a spatula until well combined. Let the rice cool to room temperature.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Fillings

Slice the Ahi tuna, avocado, and cucumber into thin strips.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Maki Roll

Place a sheet of nori, shiny side down, on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands and take about 3/4 cup of sushi rice, spreading it evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. Lay a few strips of Ahi, avocado, and cucumber along the bottom edge of the rice.

  5. 5

    Roll the Sushi

Using the mat, carefully lift the edge of the mat closest to you and start rolling the sushi away from you. Roll tightly, yet gently, until you reach the border of nori. Moisten the edge with water to seal the roll.

  6. 6

    Slice and Serve

Use a sharp knife to cut the roll into 6-8 pieces. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
