Crispy Fried Green Tomatoes

Bacon-Onion Jam

Method

Crispy Fried Green Tomatoes

  1. 1

    Prepare the Tomatoes

Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices and lay them out on a paper towel. Sprinkle lightly with salt and let them sit for 15 minutes to draw out moisture.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a second bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, mix the cornmeal, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and salt.

  3. 3

    Bread the Tomatoes

Dredge each tomato slice in flour, then dip it in buttermilk, and finally coat it with the cornmeal mixture. Ensure they are well coated.

  4. 4

    Fry the Tomatoes

In a deep skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the breaded tomato slices in batches. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes on each side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Feta Cheese Spread

  1. 5

    Mix the Spread Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine feta cheese, cream cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic powder, and fresh dill. Use a fork or mixer to blend until smooth and creamy.

Bacon-Onion Jam

  1. 6

    Cook the Bacon

In a skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon, crumble it, and set aside. Leave the bacon fat in the skillet.

  2. 7

    Cook the Onions

In the same skillet, add the chopped large onion to the bacon fat. Cook over medium heat until the onion is soft and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.

  3. 8

    Combine and Simmer

Add the crumbled bacon, brown sugar, balsamic vinegar, and black pepper to the onions. Stir well and let it simmer for another 5 minutes until thickened.
